Grief
Grief comes to all of us at different times. It is very personal and one of the hardest moments in life.
When you experience grief it can be overwhelming and it can feel like an eternity to move through it.
The people around you in your life can help but it is often difficult to know the best way to offer consolation.
Private Home Health Care is looking at ways that could respect and support those who grieve.
Say the Person’s Name – We recall a funeral when the celebrant said, be sure to remember the deceased and do not be afraid to name the person. It may bring tears but stories can help.
“How are you?” – the answer is obvious so perhaps a better question is “How are you feeling today?”
Offer Hope – this can be tricky. You don’t want to be too cavalier but offering support and noting the griever’s strength and how time can be a healer could help.
Reach Out – Take the first step to reach out. It’s difficult for those grieving to do that first.
Weeks or months could go by so calling or visiting over time to check in can be a support.
Meal Prep – Dropping off a meal is another way to show you care. Depending on the situation meal prep and shopping might be needed.
Listen Well – You don’t always need an answer. Sometimes the best thing to do is listen and only offer a suggestion only when asked.
Avoid Judgements – Each person is unique so the grieving process can look differently for everyone. Try to be patient and avoid passing judgement.
Grief is enormous for most people and they need our support.
