Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Have you ever wondered what we here in Massachusetts and New England can find for seasonal fruits and vegetables during the fall season?

It turns out that there are quite a few items that you can find at your local farms.  All fruits and vegetables that are good for you too!

In season now for vegetables are broccoli raab, cauliflower, celery, leeks, and turnips. In addition, you should be able to buy brussel sprouts and escarole.

Fresh fruits that are available include grapes, cranberries, squash and pumpkins.  Believe it or not but varieties of squash and pumpkins are considered a fruit and not a vegetable.

Furthermore fava beans are a prime shelling bean that is fresh through November.

You may say that it seems a bit limited compared to the choices we’ve had all summer.  That is true but there is still a wide variety of heart and body healthy fruits and vegetables at this time of year.

The health benefits for you are huge.  For example, cauliflower is low in calories and packed with vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, folate and vitamin K.

Leeks in the onion family are also low in calories and high in nutrients like magnesium and vitamins A, C, and K. They also contain iron and fiber.

Your purchase of fresh grapes will provide you with antioxidants to help your cells.  In addition they are rich in nutrients like copper and vitamin K.  There are more too if you look it up.

Private Home Health Care likes to be sure to include seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables to our diets.  Check out recipes online to find different ways to use them and enjoy!
