Food Safety Week

This begins food safety week, something very important for seniors.

As you age, and after age 65, you are more at risk for illness from consuming some foods and beverages.

If you have ever been ill from food poisoning it is not a pleasant experience.  The bathroom becomes your favorite room in your house.

Sometimes it’s hard to remember what to do so we’ve listed some tips and suggestions for certain foods.

Five safety tips to follow:

Make sure you keep your food clean.

It’s important to keep raw food away from cooked food.

Cook food thoroughly.

Store your food at the proper temperature.

Be certain that you use safe water and raw materials.

Think about chicken for example.  Raw chicken has salmonella so you need to be cautious when enjoying a nice chicken dish.

If you put raw chicken on a cutting board or your countertop you need to wash both areas thoroughly after as well as your hands.  

Putting a dishwasher-safe cutting board through a dishwasher run is a great help.

Food made with eggs can be tricky.  Refrigeration is usually needed and there is a shelf life so we watchful of dates.

Deli meat is another food that you have to pay attention to.  Most last for a week at a maximum.  Follow the expiration date closely on this food.  

It’s easy to lose track of dates for different foods so make notes for yourself if needed.
