Breakfast as You Age

Breakfast is one of your three meals a day, for some of you.

You may say that you can’t eat first thing in the morning or that you have to start your day with something in your stomach.

Whichever it is, we think that we can make a case for having breakfast at some point in the morning, especially as we age.

Once you hit age 65, your mind and body start to change.  You need help in many areas to maintain a healthy body.  Breakfast is one way to do that.

Keeping up with your nutrients and muscle mass can start with breakfast.  

Vitamin B12 is harder to process as you get older which changes your nervous system and blood cells.  

By eating some cereals, eggs and yogurt in the morning you can help add some of that vitamin back.  Another protein to your breakfast can work on strengthening your muscle mass. 

How about your hydration as you age?  It can be hard to remember so if you incorporate juice, milk or water into your morning that can start your day off right.

An important piece to remember is that you need to add the “right” things into your breakfast to get the most benefits.

Overnight oats are easy to make and a great choice.   The oats give you fiber and your can add things like milk, chia seeds and flaxseeds to increase the nutrients.

A greek yogurt parfait with berries and granola is another good option, and you get added calcium, Vitamin A, riboflavin and phosphorus.

Both of these options are good for any time during the morning too.  You don’t need to eat them first thing if that doesn’t appeal to you.
