Boston Marathon Day

The world’s oldest marathon has begun. 

The Boston Marathon started in 1897 and continues as a major marathon to this day.

Can you imagine running this race?  You would be running for 26 miles and 385 yards.

Runners start in the town of Hopkinton and end in Boston’s Back Bay near the Boston Library.

The first winner was John J. McDermott who ran 24.5 miles in a bit less than 3 hours.  It wasn’t until 1927 that the race increased to the current distance.

You needed to be a man to run the race until 1972 when the first women were allowed. In 1975 the first wheelchair races began.

This year there are 24,362 men and women running the Boston Marathon.  Most will finish which is an amazing accomplishment.

People from all over the world have won the race.  In the most recent years, Kenyans and Ethiopians have dominated.

There is a lot of preparation for the 130th marathon race.  The Boston Athletic Association is responsible for the event each year and does an unbelievable job. 

Private Home Health Care is blown away by the ability to run continuously for 26 miles.  Kudos to everyone who finishes, whatever time it takes.
